Tour of Jack’s Nursery

I have been throroughly entrenched in the “nesting” stage for the past few days.

Or, as my Grandma would have called it – “Getting Smart”.

The nursery and closet are finally done, with all of his clothes arranged (in neatly catagorized-by-age rows nonetheless).  His blankies, diapers, toys and bathtub stuff is neatly organized.  AND his hospital bag is packed and in my car (along with the now-installed carseat).

Go me. :)

Ever since I saw Father of the Bride, Part 2 years ago I knew I wanted a yellow nursery.  And yellow it is!  Painting was the first thing that was completed.  I always tease that Kevin had it painted within 20 minutes of learning I was pregnant (and that’s only a slight exaggeration!).  Our trim colors are seafoam green & light blue, with older-style Winnie the Pooh as the dominant character portrayed.

The organization and cleaning of the nursery took a lot longer than the painting did, however.  It’s amazing at how complex setting up a functional nursery & closet can be!  As much work as we’ve done to change this room, there’s still room for improvement.

But I do so love our nursery.  Being the sentimental sap that I am, you can catch me sometimes just sitting in the rocking chair (a lovely old one that belonged to my Granny), getting misty eyed thinking about the little boy that will be occupying this room for years to come.

(Although I doubt the Winnie the Pooh will stay that long).

On occassion I’ve even found my husband stealing some time in there himself.  Yesterday I caught him batting playfully at the little bears hanging from the mobile.  Sweet man that he is. :)

Our New Laminate Wood Floor is Finished!

This weekend has been pretty crazy!  Right now I’m sitting on the floor,
on the only available comfy spot in our whole living room – our area rug.

I just love the look of my rug on the floor! (It was a birthday present from Kevin in 2006.) :)

All last week we were working like madmen tearing up our living room, moving all the furniture, and ripping out carpet everywhere for our new floor.  And on Saturday it was finally installed!

At 10:30 am the 2 men from Floor It Now arrived to start the work.  I thought I would be able to stay since the laminate floor is floating (no glue) but when they took out the saw and I started smelling the dust, gag city kinda exploded within my pregnant self. :)   So I headed over to mom’s for the day to avoid the sawdusty smell and Kevin stayed home to supervise.

They were *almost* finished at 4:30.  I say *almost* because the guy who had the airgun equiptment to do our molding along the baseboards didn’t show up – so we had to schedule the molding to be finished at 3 pm yesterday afternoon (Sunday).

As of today, though, everything is completely finished with the floor and Kevin is painting our old baseboards white tonight to match our molding at the bottom (that’s the blue tape you see in some pics along the bottom of the wall) – and then we’ll start putting furniture back…tonight!!!!!!!!  Whoohoo!  It’s TERRIBLE to have your living room (and dining room – since that’s where we piled all of our furniture and stuff!) a wreck.  I told Kevin I’ll definately be glad when all the furniture is back so I can start cleaning again.

He just raised his eyebrows and laughed at me.  :)

But seriously, it’s a mess!  This is our dining room right now.  See the huge entertainment center?  That was a pain to move (well, for Kevin…lucky me got to play the role of the helpless pregnant female..hehe).  Our couch is behind it, and then behind our couch is a huge box full of all the books from our living room bookshelves.

And…then.. …the bookshelves are in the guest room…along with..the dining room chairs…the printer…and the parrot. GAH!

…so, you see, I can’t wait to get my house back in order!  At least tomorrow I’ll probably have a chair to sit on again in here. :)    But, of course, it’s definately worth it.

And the best part?  It’s completely paid for.   We don’t do credit (not since November of 2006), so saving the money for this endeaver was a slow process and you know what?

It’s definately worth it.  Ahhhhh…..

Demolition Time!

Last Friday, Kevin and I went to Floor It Now to pick our our new floor.  We’re having laminate “hardwood-look” floor put down in our foyer, living room, and hall way.  It’s a project 2 years in the making and we’re excited about it!

Over the weekend, we got a lot more accomplished (in terms of moving furniture and all my books) than we thought we would, so yesterday when the Floor It Now guy called us back to confirm final pricing, we went ahead and scheduled him to send the install guys out this Saturday!  We’ve been working like madmen around here, and plan on having everything finished up Friday night (thankfully Kevin has Fridays off!).

Last night saw the start of the official “demolition” of our living room.  The couch had been moved Sunday night, all the books and shelves have been moved over the weekend, so Kevin borrowed a dolly from the neighbor to get our largest furniture piece (a huge cherry finish entertainment center) moved.  It was a crazy chore to get all of our electronic stuff unhooked and everything cleared off!  Labeling was very important to me.  You don’t know frustration until you look at hundreds of black wires and have no clue as to what goes where or with what machine!

So, finally, with that out of the way, up comes the carpet!

In this photo, Kevin is saying…

“Baby, will you PLEASE stop taking photos and move this stuff so I can clear this area??”

Here is my lovely man, doing lovely man work, and lovingly stripping up the parquay wood squares in our little entry way.  It was hot in our house, so he took his shirt off (a rare thing for him to do).

I didn’t mind a bit.  :)   Ty Pennington, eat your heart out.

I love playing with the close up focus on my camera.  Berber looks so different at this angle.  Not much I can say about the ugly green foam though!  It does present a striking contrast, and interesting view.

ALL DONE!  :)

We’re the Proud Parents of a New Floor

As I mentioned yesterday, my hubby and I were headed to the Floor It Now to pick out a new floor for our home.  We’ve been wanting one (and badly needing one) for nearly 2 years, but since we do not use credit we needed to wait until we saved enough money up to get one.  And finallly the time came!

We weren’t sure at first whether we wanted new carpet, hardwood, or laminate.  We have 2 indoor dogs, a ferret, a parrot, and a baby on the way in 2 months so we debated the pros & cons of each.  Finally we came to the conclusion that we simply did not want to deal with the hassel of carpet care over the next 5 years or so – especially considering how hard we typically are on carpets anyway.  So that left us with hardwood or laminate.  Our #1 top priority right now is “easy to care for” and “doesn’t show too much wear and tear”.   With large dogs with paws and a wife (that’s me, yay) that hates floor upkeep and does it drudgingly, we thought a true hardwood may not be our best bet right now.  We could just imagine all of the scratches it would endure in the upcoming year.  Plus, with the lower price of laminate we could do a bit more than we originally planned on.

So with that settled, we headed off to Floor It Now with the intention of getting laminate “hardwood-looking” flooring.  The one thing we agreed on the most is that neither one of us wanted a very light, light colored floor (famous last words).

Upon arrival, we liked the store set up immediately.  It had all of these different flooring down throughout the warehouse that we could walk upon while looking through the laid out samples.  It was pretty neat and gave us a feeling of “realism” and how the floor would feel at home.  The very first flooring that we both said “oh, I like that one!” ended up being the one we finally picked - even though we spent 40 minutes looking after that.  What’s that saying about you should always go with your first gut instinct?  It would have saved us time. :)

After we had our choice picked out, the sales rep began working with us and the dimensions we brought.  The first price he quoted was a wee bit out of our budget so we scaled back a bit (we originally wanted to do every room except for the 3 bedrooms).  We also scaled back from the thick padding to the basic padding, which saved a pretty good bit per square foot.  I hadn’t even realized laminate flooring needed padding so I hadn’t figured that in our budget when we first started out.  Another thing I had not figured in was the small wood molding that needs to be placed at the bottom of the baseboards to allow for floor movement and stretching.  Kevin didn’t even think to mention it to me until we were halfway into the purchasing process…haha.  So that was another hit to our budget.   Luckily professional installation wasn’t too bad.  (Yeh, I know, we could have saved by doing it ourselves – but we are not the do-it-yourself type.)

After all the details were hammered out, we set up an appointment with the guy to come out tonight to finalize our dimensions, and we’ll call him when we’re ready.  To save money (about $200) we decided to do one thing ourselves – and move out all the furniture and have the flooring ready for when they came.  It’ll take us about 2 weeks to get everything cleared away, and then they’ll be out and have our new floor installed in one day!   We’re so excited, although I’m a bit more anxious than my hubby.  I’m always anxious about huge purchases like this.  Fears about whether we made the right decision, chose the right company, chose the right floor, and made all the right moves creep up in me.   I guess it’s the old perfectionist in me.  I know in my head that everything will most likely be fine, but my emotions try to take over and make me worry.  My hubby just thinks I’m silly (although he said a beautiful prayer to the Lord about blessing our decisions yesterday after he realized how worried I was). :)

And guess what.   After all the decisions were made we laughed over the fact that the floor we ended up with (the one we both LOVED due to it’s styling and details) is a very light colored knotty pine floor.   It was pretty funny for both of us because we had swore we didn’t like light colored flooring and would “never” get that color.   I guess that’s what they mean when they say “never say never”.

My Nursery Theme – Winnie the Pooh

Mommy is really silly.  Really.  All her life she wanted to have her first nursery decorated in Classic Winnie-the-Pooh decor, kinda like the picture here.  And sure enough, here I am, awaiting placement in a fluffy Pooh Bear room.   I would much rather have decorated in sports or a more boyish theme…but don’t tell mommy since it might hurt her feelings!

The colors in my room are light yellow on the walls with a soft pastel green trim that daddy conjured up from a few other paint colors.  Pooh and Piglet seem to be everywhere!  Even my crib has cute little stuffed hundred-acre wood animals in it.  What do they think I am…a little girl??

What am I going to do with my silly mommy? :)   Oh bother.

My First Home!

My mommy eating her first meal the weekend after they bought our house! Electricity was not even on yet!In March of 2006,  Mommy and Daddy bought their very first home.  Daddy was able to move into it right away, but Mommy did not move in until they were married a few months later.

Our home is in South Carolina.  Mommy has lived here her whole life, although Daddy has only been here for a few years now.  We are very lucky to live close to everything….malls, stores, groceries, gas stations, fast food places, and (of course!) Super Walmart.   We also live very close to Mommy’s family – and only a mile away from Mommy’s parents – Gramma Cill and GrandFather Jack (who This flag stays up year round!I was named after).

Our home is a one story ranch style with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.  Mommy really loves the 2 bathrooms and feels high class now… because she grew up in a house with only one bathroom! (Daddy just thinks she is funny :) ).   Even though we’re in the city, our yard is very private!  Woods surround us on 3 sides and we only have one neighbor house.  The backyard is really big too, and we have a huge screened in patio in the back of the lot that Papa Dean finished for us!

Mommy and Daddy work hard to try to keep it clean and tidy.  They’ve been working extra extra hard since Mommy got pregnant with me!  Mommy says that when she first told daddy about me, he had my nursery painted within 20 minutes.

Maybe that’s an exaggeration on Mommy’s part, but it feels good to know that they can love me that much. :)

Our Back Porch!Since Mommy was laid off, she’s also had time to finally get our home decorated nicely.  Mommy & Daddy both love old, antique, country style furniture and themes.  They also like lots of color!  In our home you’ll find many many rich colors such as reds, browns, golds, greens, blues, yellows, wood stains, and even purples.

During the holidays, mommy likes to decorate with themed items like scarecrows (fall), flags (4th of July), and villages (christmas)  I can’t wait to play with them all (although please don’t tell mommy that or she will worry).
