Intro to Sleep Talking

My husband, Kevin, is an awesome man.  Although we do occassionally have our spats, typically I feel like I’m bursting with love for this wonderful, terrific, hunk of a man I married.  I can’t brag on him enough!

Plus, he makes me laugh. :)  And that’s a good, easy way to my heart.

Kevin is one of those who doesn’t really try to be funny (when he does, it usually fails) - it’s those moments when he’s not trying that he actually accomplishes to make me laugh the hardest.  For instance, he’s from upstate New York.  And I’m a southern girl - we live in South Carolina (my homestate).   Many times he innocently tries to say a word or the name of some place down here, and gets it wrong completely (for instance, he called our state’s most popular football stadium the “Bruce Willis Stadium” once - it’s really named the “Williams Brice Stadium”). :)  The deep shade of pink he turns once he realizes a spoken fumble only endears him to my heart even more.   But we’ll save his word fumbles for another post - I keep reminding myself that I need to write them down one day before I forget them all!  It’s so much a part of his charm.

Right now I am thinking of how he talks in his sleep.   He’s such a hardworking man (he works outside, all day, as a sub contractor for our state’s largest utility company) - and on days when he’s especially tired, he’s more prone to uttering the most profound sentences whilest asleep!

The first time I experienced this, a few months after we married, I was laying in bed reading.   All of a sudden, Kevin’s eyes popped open and looked at the ceiling.

He then pointed his finger towards the light, shook it, and yelled “Stay OFF the grass!”.   Then he dropped his arm and commenced his usual snoring.   It surprised me so much that I woke him up just to see what in the world had happened.  He thought I was the nutty one, because, of course he “didn’t do no sucha thing”. :)

Then there was the time when he suddenly sat up in bed.   I had my laptop on at the foot of the bed, laying on my belly, and no other lights were on.  I looked back in time to see him stand up and proceed to leave his side of the bed, walk to the foot of the bed, and stop.   Now, mind you, my laptop cord was dangling off the bed and plugged in on the wall opposite of the foot.   So thus the cord prevented him from walking any further.  He seemed to realize this (I thought) as he didn’t try to step over the cord, but just stood there looking frustrated.

“Where are you going, baby??” I asked innocently.   His eyebrows notted up and he said “I gotta get the wire!”, and held up his hand in confusion.   I thought he was referring to the laptop cord in front of him.  So I held it up and said “Aww, I’m sorry, do you need me to move this, sweetie??”.

“NO!” he cried.  The he got even frustrated and said “NO!! I gotta CUT the wire.  I gotta get the tool so I can cut the wire.” and held up his fingers to show me a circle (representing a thick, thick wire).  He repeated that 2-3 more times until I finally realized he was fully asleep!!!   I jumped up, hugged him and slowly marched him back to his side of the bed and tucked him in.   This only seemed to confuse him.   I just said “Shhhhhh…..it’s ok, we’ll get the wire cut tomorrow, baby, you go back to sleep and everything will be just fine.”

I kissed him, got back in bed, and within 10 seconds he was snoring peacefully.   I then proceeded to laugh my heiny off for 30 minutes under the covers. :)   The next day he had absolutely no memory of it.   To this day, he still doesn’t believe that it really happened.

Last night was his most recent excursion into the sleep talking world.   I was laying in bed reading a book, and he was tossing restlessly beside me (it was hot in our room).   A few moments later (he was on his belly), he looked up at me with his eyes open.  I smiled at him, and he proceeded to say “But we got to get the rest done!”.   I thought he was referring to our living room floor, which we’re currently remodeling.  That is…until he said… “We got to get the rest done - then we have another transformer to do!”.   And his head popped back down and he fell soundly back to sleep.

Ahh.  I love my dear, sweet, loveable husband so much!  I wouldn’t trade him for anyone else!   After being married for a while now, I’ve come to realize that long, tiresome, frustrating days at work (the kind that usually leave him drained and with a headache) are typically what prompts his sleep talking episodes….and his the things he talks about in his sleep usually parallels his work on the job.   My mom has always told me that my own father has always been like that!  Dad is a fence installer - and mom says that dad has “put up fences” in his sleep many nights.

The only exception to the rule was the time Kevin had fallen asleep on my mom’s recliner one night - when he suddenly looked up at me and said nothing more than….

“Chicken Sandwhich”.

Anyway….Goodnight all!  Sweet Dreams.

I just LOVE reading your blog! Doug does the same thing- he talks in his sleep all the time! It is so funny. One time he hopped up from the bed and proceeded to tell me (many times) that he had to “check the food.” So I said, “what do you mean?” and he said “I have to check the expiration dates!” It was so random and I still laugh about that one… It’s such a blessing to be married! I’m glad you have Kevin.
