Baby Days: Things Soon Forgetten

I can’t believe how fast time flies.  For new readers out there, I began this blog back in January when I was 6 months pregnant with my first child.  My hope was to record all of the intricacies, feelings, and changes of pregnancy - and to record the growth of “Little Jack” after he has born.

He was finally born on May 4, at 2:04 pm.  This past Sunday he hit the 4 week mark…and tomorrow marks his 1 month old birthday.

The past few weeks have been perhaps the most amazing ones I’ve ever had, and they have gone by much too quickly.  Jack changes daily.  The changes are subtle, but they’re there…pawing, grasping, and threatening to steal my newborn away.  Even now I feel my memries of his newbornness slipping away.  And in less than 48 weeks, he will have all-but left babyhood behind.

Here are the memories I hope to preserve - the ones time and progress will try to steal someday.

  • The “laugh” he does when he realizes he’s about to nurse
  • How he bobs his head left and right just before latching on…
  • …and how he brings his fist to rest on his cheek after he begins to eat
  • How he so cutely interlocks his fingers together when he brings his hand together
  • The little white millia on his nose during those first few weeks
  • How his left nostril appeared squished ater birth, and then one day I suddenly noticed it wasn’t
  • How he arches his back and grunts while stretching
  • His “stretchy” face that he does while sleeping
  • His big ol’ dark eyes that looks out at the world in wonder
  • The quiet, bright eyed alertness he’s always had
  • How good of a baby he is
  • His first trips to Walmart, the park, a restaraunt, church, and a baseball game.
  • When he sleeps on my own dad’s (his “papa”) round belly
  • How much he hated being naked
  • The peepee disasters of the first few diaper changes
  • The unneeded worry I felt over his circumcision and belly button
  • How small he looked in his car seat
  • How he only cries if he’s hungry, wet, or feeling bad
  • The first time he turned his head to look at me across the room
  • His vocal noises that seem to increase with each passing day
  • The differences in his cries when he’s hungry (”hu-laaaa”) or naked / mad (”wwwwaaahhh…wahhh”)
  • How his legs move in and out to the “beat” of his cry rhythm
  • The morning he woke up and suddenly burst into a huge smile for the first time (June 2)
  • His toothless gums and milky breath
  • His soft skin and angel-fine head full of hair
  • Baby feet
  • Baby hands, with long fingers, and nails that grow an inch every day it seams
  • The way he falls asleep on his dad’d chest
  • His tiny pajamas
  • How cute his face is when trying to poopie
  • The first time his eyes followed a moving object back and forth (May 31)
  • His first favorite color - lime green
  • How he already fights sleep
  • The way he demands to eat at noon on Sunday during church
