It’s hard to believe that this journey is almost up for me! With less than 27 days to go before the official due date, I thought I’d go ahead and start wrapping up the “pregnancy” part of this blog.
For those who are reading this blog for the first time (or maybe just forgot), let me give a rundown.
I’m 25 years old, and married to a wonderful man (Kevin) who will be 25 in one month. We’ve known each since August of 2005 and will celebrate our 2nd wedding anniversary soon.
And I’m currently 9 months pregnant with our very first child – a boy, who will be named “Jack Evan” (aka. “Little Jack” after his grandfather – my dad). We’re so excited! No. Make that beyond excited.
THE BEGINNING
This journey started back in August. Without going into the gruesome details, I even remember the exact time that little Jack was created (how’s that for a special memory?).
Of course we didn’t know it at that time though! In late August when the dreaded “monthly thang” didn’t arrive, I realized a certain stick test was in my immenant future.
I also “knew”.
Women are always saying how they “just know”. I never really understood until it happened to me - but I “just knew” that I was pregnant before taking the test.

I left my full time job for lunch at noon and stopped by CVS to pick up “the test”. My heart was beating completely out of me! Since I always joined my mom at her house for lunch, I couldn’t avoid visiting her that day. To make things harder, my father was home early as well! Taking “the test” – and getting a positive result – in their bathroom during that hour was beyond hard. Keeping the secret was so hard for me! But I managed to do it.
Back at work, I joined my friend Ebonie (who convinced me to hurry up with the test in the first place) in her office and finally let out the big news! Talk about exciting! It was nearly impossible to get through the rest of the day (and keep “it” a secret from everyone else). That evening, after taking yet another pregnancy test (I was in shock and wanted to make sure the positive was correct), I went into full-force cleaning mode. Kevin, my husband, thought I was going bonkers. I was begging him to do all sorts of odd chores….and, of course, he was refusing. (I hadn’t told him yet)
At 8 pm, he went to our back patio to watch wrestling and promised to be back in at 9 pm. So I set my plan into action. Taking the 2 tests, I inserted them into a baby bottle, along with a printed poem with a stork on it. I then laid out the bottle and decorations on the floor where I knew he’d find them in the room he was cleaning. I was extremely excited. I felt like I would burst from happiness.
And when he didn’t come back inside at 9 pm, I became LIVID. (Talk about a wide range of emotions!). I called him at 9:30, screamed that he didn’t care about me, said “GOODNIGHT!” and turned off every light in the house and went to bed. Of course, my poor hubby had no idea what was going on. (It’s quite humerous to think back on!). He came back inside about 10 minutes later (I was in the bed), and suddenly I heard a huge crashing sound coming down the hall.
He was running full force to our bedroom. “What do you mean????” he asked, holding up the obvious bottle and poem. “Are you SERIOUS???”…. “You’re joking!”. I think he managed to utter all 3 questions at the exact same time.
And the we both started crying and hugging each other. It was a very nice moment.
The following day, we took my parents out to eat so we could deliver the good news. I’m an only child, so you can imagine how proud they were. Well, except for my mom. She was just in total shock and didn’t really say more than 2 words (“Oh, uh..really?) before returning to her meal. She did warm up to the thought soon after though.
By the end of the weekend our entire large, extended family (on both sides) as well as our church family knew.
It was a very exciting time in our lives!
So that’s our beginning.
