Time Flies When You’re Having Son

In my deliriously pregnant-fat state, I counted on my fingers a while ago to see how much longer until our baby arrives.

To my shock & awe I couldn’t get my 3rd finger all the way raised.

Yep, that’s right, I only have 2 and a half short little months left!  It’s already practically the middle of February (hey, we only have 29 days this month).  The first half of this pregnancy felt like a millinnium.  Seriously.  Each day I would wake up and realize I was only one day further along than yesteray.  And time draggggged on.

And on.

I had been told by the the numerous gazillion pregnant women friends around me (isn’t it funny how when you’re pregnant, everyone else seems to be too?) that once you reach your’re 20th week it’s like you start a fastfastfast thermodynamic countdown that even Einstein himself probably never knew about (how could he…he was a male).  Of course I didn’t believe them.   But sure enough, when that 20th week started, I felt like I jumped off a cliff.

A short, 10 foot tall cliff where the bottom looks so close I can touch it with my big toe already.

These current days are definately flying!  Pretty soon our life is going to change so drastically that neither I nor my husband can, right now, imagine the impact it will have on us.

This little person that’s about to be born is going to change not only our bank account balance, but also our lives, our habits, our routines, our names (to mommy and daddy!) and our feelings.  He’ll also change the lives of those around us that love us and are a part of our large circle of family and friends.  He’ll definately change my own parents lives (he’s their first grandchild).

It’s amazing at how much the future holds for this little person inside of me who has never even seen the outside world.  And what’s even stranger, he doesn’t even know it yet – and years from now he won’t even remember 2008…or 2009.  And probably not even 2010.

And speaking of time moving fast…what’s sad is, at this rate, I’ll probably wake up tomorrow and it will already be 2015 and my baby will no longer be a “baby”.   I want to enjoy every minute of his childhood.  I want to be there for him, watch his first step (instead of letting a daycare worker see it), write his first words in a book (uh..or on this blog), lay on the grass to watch clouds, and see his smile as he bites into a watermelon slice.  Then I want to bottle it all up and put it on a shelf and savor the memories forever.

There is so much to look forward to, and it’s all going to happen so quickly.  And life is far too precious to be “busy” all the time and let the little things pass by.  It’s really hard for me to comprehand why some people focus more on “things” or “work” or “activities” and don’t spend time with those they love.  I wonder sometimes if they truly realize how fast life passes by and how close to mortality we all are at every second.  We just never know.

In the span of millinia upon millinia of years that have passed on this earth, we as individuals only get to enjoy life for a few short decades.  All of the time we spend pecking away at musical instruments, working on our careers, reading books, partying, dining out, and even Googling the lastest rumors, all of it is for naught.  It doesn’t matter a hill of beans.  Material objects rot.  Musical fads die away.  Money is spent on wasteful things.  Food is consumed then flushed, and never thought of again.   And even Britney Spears can’t keep us Googling for too long.   In the end, the only thing that truly matters – the only legacy we leave behind – is our relationships with others.  And that legacy can either be a good one or a bad one depending on how much effort was put into that relationship.

So, as these last 2 months of pregnancy pass me by, I’m trying my hardest to focus on the little things around me, such as….. the first time I watched the baby kick (January 10), the first time my husband felt him kick (February 6), the look on my husband’s face as he sticks his mouth to my big ol’ belly to whisper “Daddy loves you!” (amazement), and even the nagging question of whether my son will appreciate a pastel yellow Winnie-the-Pooh nursery after his first birthday passes (uh, probably not).  I know all too well that these days of plump baby making - and even our span of life on earth - will all too soon be over.

Now please excuse me while I go cry in a corner.  Silly emotional pregnant woman that I am.

WFMW – Keep Your Wallet a FatWallet

Ok… I know, I know.

I’ve already posted a WFMW today with links to my favorite online shopping sites (ones that completely support home-based businesses).  But it suddenly occured to me that with all of the online shopping sites being promoted by Mr. Linky at the Rocks In My Dryer WFMW tip page, there is one place you should always go before you shop online!

www.FatWallet.com

FatWallet is an online tool / community / forum / wiki all rolled into one.  It provides the best up-to-date information about online coupons, forums where people share hot deals they have found, plenty of discount codes, tips on how to get things for free.

They also have a dedicated “online stores” section where links to corporate shopping sites (such as staples, photoworks, and even American Eagle!) offer cash back percentage on EVERY order.  Some companies even give a cash reward (such as $10 for first time orders), which means “profit to you!” if your order cost is only a few dollars in the first place!

To make this site work for you, sign up for a free membership account.  Then, whenever you are in need to “shop” for something (anything!) go to fatwallet first, ensure that you are signed in, then search their list to see what cash back offers they have.  Click on the desired link - you’ll then be taken to the site you were going to go to in the first place (i.e. Banana Republic), but now when you order, you’ll be given a cash back discount which will appear in your FatWallet account within 30 days.  It will be “on hold” at first (to protect FatWallet from losing money on product returns to the original company) and it usually takes 2-3 months for the hold to be released.  After the hold is released, you can request a direct deposit or check to be sent to you for the amount in your FatWallet account!

If the company you are wanting to buy from, or the product you need, is not in their cash back list, head over to the forums and do a “search” for the product you are looking for a discount on.  Someone in the forum probably has some valuable information for you!  The forums also hold great tips on current credit card / bank promotions (i.e. $100 bonus for signing up for ABC Checking..or whatever!).  In-store deals are also discussed on how to make the best use of paper coupons.

So what are you waiting on?  Head over to www.FatWallet.com and sign up.  Then don’t forget to go there first before shopping anywhere online!  You’ll save money every time. :)

Here is a list of current companies that offer cash back from every order that is generated from FatWallet users!

Fabulous Home-Based Business Shopping

This week’s Works for Me Wednesday is all about our favorite subject – Shopping!  To be more specific, Shannon, from Rocks In My Dryer (WFMW Host) has asked us all to post our favorite shopping sites.  You know, the places that really, uh.. work for me. :)

My list is going to be dedicated to quality home-based business sites as well as those site that help home-based business women.

I wasn’t really quite sure at first what I would write about.  After mulling it over, however, I realized surprisingly that the majority of the places I do shop from are those home based business sites that are run by women and men all over the country from the comfort of their living room.  The quality of these products tend to be above and beyond those of more commercialized chain stores.  Why?  Because these people are focused on making a living (or good hobby money) – and they are very proud of their work.  My favorite ones to frequent are unique artwork sites, photography & clipart sites (especially the country craft ones!), odds & ends stores, and stores that sell retro themed products (such as the old fashioned gingam ruffle apron!!).

The other few online shopping sites I visit are actually those companies which help support home based businesses.   From these sites I’ve purchased (or gotten for free!) soy candle making supplies, shopping cart software, business cards & pamphlets, unique software, website hosting accounts, website management software, and much more.  And I appreciated the quality and ease at which they helped me out in my own home-based business ventures.  Every site I list in the second section, I have used in the past (or still use!) to generate that wonderful home-based greenbacked moola that all of us housewives crave.  :-D   If anyone has any questions about how to get started with your own business, I’ll be glad to help you out.  Please note though, I do not play with “get rich quick” stuff.  I take the hard way out and actually like the fulfillment that comes from seeking out the best legitimate home based opportunities!

So, here they are  My favorite online shopping sites in support of the home-based business -

Awesome Home-Based Businesses -

  1. CollieShop – this is my very own homebased business.  It’s pretty neat, in my humble opinion. :)  I design rough and smooth collie breed artwork and sell on base products.  It’s been open since 2002, has over 3000 unique products, and does me well!
  2. Binkie Baskets – my sister-in-law is the inventor of a unique baby product called the Binkie Basket (a pacifier holder that attatches to your child’s crib or sits on a desk).  She crafts them all by hand at her home and then sells them to frustrated mommies everywhere.  Her products can be purchased through Etsy or custom made by contacting her through the email listed on her site.
  3. Country Clipart By Lisa – she shares the same name as me, but I wish I shared the same creative talent as her! Her fabulous site (open for 10 years now) showcases thousands upon thousands of very high quality country / primitive clipart she has created.  The prices are very reasonable, and I have yet to find another clipart source as wonderful as this one.
  4. Heavenly Promises – This Las Vegas based business sells high quality uniquely designed themed candy & gum wrappers!  I love themed candy wrappers and think it’s just the cutest idea ever.  Baby showers wouldn’t be complete without them!
  5. The Kitchen Madonna – love aprons?  I do!  The Kitchen Madonna not only has advice, but the most adorable
homemade aprons you have ever seen
  6. Kimberlee Faith Bags – these totebags, available in various sizes, can be customized with the fabric of your life..uh..choice!   And they are completely gorgeous.  I typically do not like “contemporary” and “modern” looking things but these are absolutely fabulous.  They’re handmade by a mom of 2 who started out making these for herself…then for friends…and it exploded from there!
  7. The Craft Mall – ok, this isn’t exactly one business…more like thousands!  It’s designed where you can browse and purchase thousands of unique homemade crafts from individual sellers.
  8. Etsy Shopping Mall – this is a more corporately styled version of the Craft Mall.  Individual sellers set up “free stores” to showcase and sell their handmade products (very awesome products, I must say!).  You can browse through the “buy” section of Etsy and find just about anything you can reasonably imagine.
  9. Shop or Create What's on Your Mind at CafePress – whenever I need a customized “look” or certain theme on clothing (especially when Im looking for personalized gifts for baby and mom!), the first place I head for is the cafepress marketplace and browse their topics.  Their marketplace is comprised of millions of individual home-based “cafepress shop owners” who have worked their butts off creating unique artwork for the based product cafepress prints on.  You’ll find any topic imaginable here (from religious to rowdy to rover!).
  10. Busy Bodies – this  cafepress based store is one of the most adorable sites I’ve ever encountered.  The lady who runs this is really sweet and has been designing her own tshirts since the late ’90s!  Thousands of stick figures with every possible theme imaginable are portrayed doing whatever it is you would love to do, all with the slogan “I [something]” on them.  My favorites include “I Play” (clarinet), “I Blog”, “I Farm” and “I Bake” and “I Do” (a little stick figure groom!).  It’s hilarious!

Best Sites for Home-Based Business Women

  1.  Cafepress – this one is the biggie for me.  If it wasn’t for Cafepress, I wouldn’t have my wonderful income generating online store, CollieShop.  This California based print-on-demand company was founded in the late 1990s (1999, I believe).  They offer individual artists base products, premium ecommerce website framework, business support forums, designing tips, marketing knowledge, product-printing-on-demand, drop-shipping, customer service for your own customers, and MUCH more.  As an artist, you can open a free basic shop (which requires absolutely no web expertise), and feature your artwork on one of each of their products, OR you can open a full blown “premium shop” (for less than $7 a month!!) which gives you complete ecommerce / website control and the ability to sell thousands upon thousands of products.  This is not a “get rich quick” scheme, but a truly satisfying endeavor for those willing to work at owning their own home business!  Sign up is quick and easy – why not try it??  If you’re an artist (either by hand or by computer), you can sell your artwork on their products.
  2. eBay Stores – Ebay is great for selling…anything.  It’s like going to a flea market – if you can’t find it there, you can’t find it anywhere!  Ebay stores is for home-based sellers.  It requires only minimal web knowledge and opens your products up to a lower listing cost and gives you a full personalized page on eBay!.  Depending on your store options, you’ll typically pay $5-15 per month for the shop, a small listing fee, and a small commission price on sales.  The best selling things on here tend to be brand new electronics, “pop culture” things, very very odd items, and name brand apparel (such as baby clothes – which, by the way, you can find very cheap at local thrift stores and resell pretty high on ebay!!!  I’ve done this quite a lot).  Ebay sellers also provide an EXCELLENT resource for wholesale items (use the word “lot” at the end of your supply searches).  So go ahead - Start selling online today! Open a storefront on eBay!
  3. Etsy Stores – what eBay! did for second-hand auctions, Etsy has done for crafts.  At the Etsy.com “Sell” section, you can open your own store (for free) and sell your homemade crafts or homemade products.  They allow 5 photos per product and a place for a great description.  The store set up is very simple and requires no web expertise.  It also requires no monthly payments!! They charge only 20 cent or so per listing and then a small 3% fee when a product sells – not too bad for a massive multimillion person networking and marketing opportunity!  They have forums there where you can interact with other Etsy users and your products get listed in their marketplace.
  4. ProStores – an eBay Company - Being a spin off of Ebay, it is fully integrated with Ebay auctions, but also gives you a complete, full blown ecommerce solution and product catalog so you can have a website (and domain) outside of ebay stores.  You don’t even have to use the Ebay integration. Get your own web store at your own web address!
  5. Mary Kay Cosmetics  – I use to be a Mary Kay Consultant.  In fact, I was a consultant during the time Ms. Mary Kay herself passed away (a very sad time).  There is plenty of great money to be made in this (and fabulous prizes) if you are a social bug.  I also love their Christian & family focus – with their theme of “God first, then Family, then Career”.  One of my biggest life lesson’s also came from a Mary Kay consultant meeting.  I learned that it’s aerodynamically impossible for a bee, with such tiny wings and a fat body, to fly.  Yet he does!  It’s a great encouragement to women who are downhearted in their homebased business endeavors.
  6. Avon – who doesn’t love Avon?  I have personally known many Avon Reps.  But what’s surprising is I actually love, love, love their products also.  Their selling theories for consultants differ from Mary Kay’s in that they allow you a bit more freedom.  It’s also more popular with men – so it broadens your market!
  7. LoneStar Candle Supply – if you like making homemade candles, why not turn it into your own business?  After many, many hours of research, I settled on LoneStar Candle Supply for my candle making needs.  They were the cheapest and the customer service people were friendly.  I think it’s a smaller, homebased company as well and not some corporate conglomerate!  They have the best prices that I have found anywhere on candle wax (even soy!!), wicks, jars, and scents.
  8. 30% Off + Free 14 Day Shipping – the first place I usually send my friends when helping them set up their own business is to VistaPrint.  This site offers the ultimate “low priced” marketing materials for home-based businesses!  They are most famous for their 250 high quality free business cards (you pay only 4.95 shipping!), but did you know that if you hang on long enough you can catch everything they sell for free?  Order their freebies at one time and you’ll only pay $10-15 in shipping MAX for everything.  I typically have 3-5 home based business ventures going at all times – and once, I was going through a “gotta market these!!” spell and ordered 250 premium business cards, 50 calendar magnets, a notepad, 100 premium 3-fold fliers, 25 oversized postcards, 50 regular sized postcards, 25 business card refrigerator magnets, and 250 address labels for a total of $14.95 shipping.  I truly do not know how this company stays in business.  Your best deals will come by email after your first purchase (make sure you opt in to their emails).  AND, they come pretty frequently (about once a week for me).  Wait for the ones that say “Everything…Free!”. Here are some free links I have if anyone wants to take advantage of them! FREE Personalized Note Pads, Get FREE business cards for your business or personal use — an $85 FREE gift. Top quality! Full color! , FREE 2008 Calendar, FREE Return Address Labels, Free Business Card Magnets, FREE Invitations, FREE T-Shirt
  9. Amazon.com Marketplace – have a lot of books?  know where to find really cheap books in your town?  Sell them for a profit on the Amazon marketplace.  I’ve done this before with success.  In my experience, popular titles and college textbooks sell really well!
  10. WordPress.org - ok, this last one…well, I confess, this isn’t exactly a shopping site.  Everything on here is actually free!  Many of you who blog may already be familiar with WordPress.com and their free blogging accounts.  WordPress.org provides the actual open source software for you to host and use yourself.  WordPress is *the* ultimate blogging software and website content management system.  It’s easy to use, has many, many useful free add-on’s (made by wonderful, hardworking individual people around the us!!) and it’s what I use to control all of my websites (it’s much easier than having a complete HTML based site like I use to on my massively large collie dog educational portal – www.colliedogowners.com!).  I also use it as an extention to my cafepress based CollieShop because of it’s search engine optimization abillities!  WordPress is simply awesome, imho.

99 Ways to Daily Show Love to Your Husband

It’s February already!  Don’t we all just love February?!  I know I do.  :-D

It’s during February that we become fully adjusted to life in a new year.  Things are clearer, and our new year’s resolutions are not so far down the drain that we’re depressed about it.  The promise of a new spring, new life, and new hope for the upcoming warmer months is just around the bin.

We also have the wonderfully commercialized holiday of Valentines.  Last year, I became a little pouty about Valentine’s day because my husband, Kevin, seemed not to even know what day it was (“It’s February 10th, right??”).  Don’t get me wrong – he’s a very affectionate, romantic person….he’s just not..uh..commercialized.  When he realized how I felt, he just raised his eyebrow at me and said -

“Lisa, I try to show you I love you every day.  What’s so special about that one day??”

And you know what?  He’s right.  All of the love and affection we show to people on Valentine’s day – why don’t we do that every day??  A life is not made up of shallow, commercialized daydrops.  A rich, full life is made up of the moment by moment activities we carry out 365 days a year.

Every time my girly side gets a little starry eyed over the romance that Valentine’s day portrays, I remind myself of the lesson Kevin taught me.  As a new wife, I also have had to spend much time learning to communicate in my husband’s “other planet” language (you ladies out there know what I mean!!).

Here are some things that I’ve learned that, as a man, he appreciates far more than the commercially bought gifts we give on February 14.  I keep them in mind and work daily at putting them to use – as well as discovering new ones.  They are tried and true ways I know of telling my own husband how deeply I truly do love him.  Perhaps your man will like these too!

Top Ways to Silently Say I Love You to Your Husband

Touchdown! Reaching the 27th Week of Pregnancy

Well. They all said it would happen.

“The last part of pregnancy begins to fly by”.

I truly believe it! During my first few months, I felt like I had been pregnant my entire life – the whole 25 gosh darn years of it. (The thoughts of a pregnant woman often are irrational, to say the least). There seemed to be a completely new spin on the word “forever” as I awaited my 20th week approach.

However, once that countdown from the 20th week started ticking….and I was no longer counting up…time began to fly by.

And here it is. My 27th week of pregnancy – and the start of the final..last..ending..finito…trimester! Whoohoo! :-D

And then again, notsowhoohooo. It’s getting more and more real as the weeks days hours progress by in a blur of “omigoshihavetogetreadyforourbaby!!” excitement.  I’m feeling him kick more and more every day (thank God he’s no longer kickin’ my poor inner organs!), and yesterday my husband actually got to see and feel him moving for the first time.

“Are you doing that???!” Kevin asked, making sure it was really the baby and not me playing tricks on him.

“No silly, I can’t move my belly in one little spot no matter how flexible I claim to be.”  I replied.

He was bubbling over with new-daddy-happiness the rest of the night!!

…Here’s what Babie’s Online has to say about the 27th week of pregnancy. :)

This week marks the beginning of the third trimester. The retina, which is important in the reception of light images, develops its normal layers by the 27th week of gestation. These layers are important in receiving light and light information and transmitting it to the brain for interpretation. Your baby’s skin is quite wrinkled from floating in water. This will stay this way until a few weeks after birth as your newborn fills out into a baby. Your baby is about 14.5 inches long, and weighs over two pounds.

“Why I am Pro Life” – Further Thoughts

I frequent a lot of women based blogs, and one of my favorites is Rocks in My Dryer.  I love the humerous style of Shannon’s writing, and especially the fun blog carnivals she hosts (such as Works for Me Wednesday and the Bloggy Giveaway Carnivals).

After visiting her site last night, I discovered that she also writes for www.BlogHer.com.  And her first article I encountered is one that is a very, very sensitive topic….it’s about abortion and is titled  “Why I am Pro Life”.

Growing up in a very conservative christian school, I was “taught” (and expected) to be pro-life and completely against the pro-choice campaign.  Although I didn’t like it much, silent protests at local public schools (with photos of aborted fetuses) were part of my high school experiences.  And through it all, I never truly determined which side of the fence I stood on.  With my Biblical background, I knew all the “correct” answers and the “correct” arguments for the pro-life side.  However, inside, I also could sympathize with the pro-choice campaign.

Each side had very valid arguments.  And, unfortunately, each side looked at the issue from completely different standpoints.  I could relate to both of them, and could understand both.  Yet when I watched my pro-life counterparts trying to “reason” with the pro-choice crew (or to teens in general), terms and words and arguments were used that I knew went completely “over their head” simply because the answers did not fit with the other person’s world view, fears or outlook on things during that stage of life.

It was as if they were comparing apples to oranges:

“You’re killing a baby!”  (pro-life) vs. ”I want the legal option to protect my body!” (pro-choice)

Both are valid arguments that stem from two completely different viewpoints.

After high school, even though I’m conservative by nature, I started to fall more towards the pro-choice side.   Having grown up in a very conservative Christian circle, I also knew all too well how people react to teenage pregnancy mistakes and my heart would break for girls who had to suffer with the “evil vs. evil” choice of whether they should tell their ultra-strict parents or simply have an abortion at 2-3 months and keep family peace.

It’s really really sad, but many people who claim to be Godly Christians would turn out their own children for mistakes of the flesh.   It’s also a huge blight on a family in conservative southern circles when a girl gets pregnant unmarried.  I’m extremely thankful that my parents (who I am very close to) were not the ultra-conservative type, but it scares me to wonder how my own mom and dad would have reacted if I would have had the misfortune of making a baby during the tubulant teen years.  Shoot, I don’t know if I could have even told them that sort of news after I graduated from college!  I know all too well that children who deeply crave parental approval would rather mame their own selves than disappoint their mother or father.  These types of deep-rooted feelings in conservatively raised females also apply to wanting (and maintaining) acceptance from friends, church groups, and extended family members.  Being shunned and outcast because of a mistake can drive a person to do many things…even more harsher things such as choosing not to continue on with a fetus inside of them.

It’s very sad how much judgment, snobbery, and hypocrisy abound in the opinionated “Christian” world.  Because of that, up to now, I have never even shared with anyone my views on abortion.  I knew most would not listen – I’d just be judged, and handed the same arguments that I grew up memorizing from the Bible.  If I didn’t “listen to reason” I would be told (by some) how far away from God’s will I was, I was going to Hell for believing in murder, and that if I just prayed hard enough I would “see the light”.  All of this would be said with a pat on the back and a sad shake of the head.  Or, with raised, shocked eyebrows as if I were Lucifer incarnate.  (Truly, I am not.)  I’m not trying to make light of people who act like that – they’re good, decent people – I’m just pointing out how in very conservative social circles it’s nearly impossible to have a dissenting opinion from “the norm” of the group without being mocked or feeling degraded.

So, anyway, as I grew further from my high school days of forced pro-life protest marches, I grew silently closer to the thought that a woman should have at least “a choice”.   A “choice” to avoid family feuds.  A “choice” to avoid shame, embarrassment, and humiliation from her family community.  A “choice” to not bear a fetus she doesn’t want.  A “choice” not to bring a baby into a single parent teen home.  Yes, I knew all the pro-life arguments to these “choices”, and all of the (logical) Biblically based “reasons” behind the pro-life campaign…..but I still sympathized more with the living, established female mindset.  At the bare minimum, I felt that a civil goverment shouldn’t pass “prevention” laws that forced females to endure social / family ostracizing,  a rape-pregnancy, homelessness, financial downfall, or (in worser cases) her own death due to complications (i.e. early preeclampsia).

I felt that way up until September 12, 2007.

My husband and I had not long before discovered that I was pregnant with our first baby (Little Jack!).  The September 12 appointment was my first pre-natal visit, and I was 6 weeks LMP.  My baby had been concieved only 4 short weeks – 28 days – earlier.  He was just a teeny, tinsy speck on the screen.

In the appointment, I was given my first sonogram (ultrasound).  They used that to confirm pregnancy (instead of a blood test) and to confirm health and due date.

The lights dimmed, and I looked at the screen.  There was this most perfect little…speck..I’d ever seen in my life.  It was my baby.   He was moving around and flitting around, full of life, it appeared.

Then the nurse turned the sound up.

THA-THUMP! THA-THUMP!  THA-THUMP!

My little speck’s heart was beating strongly.  It was beating loudly.  It was beating clearly….at 172 beats per minute.  It sounded no different than my heart or your heart, except a tad faster!  I will never, in my life forget that one moment in time.

I started bawling at that point and my view points about life completely changed.  An “embryo” or ”fetus” was no longer something that I saw on National Geographic TV.  It was now “my baby”.  He had a heartbeat.  He had a future.  He had a tiny life, existing at that point as a microscopic little organism inside of my belly – his own little universe.  It was now “my choice” if “my baby” would live to develop the rest of his organs so he could survive on the “outside”.  Ultimately, it was now “my choice” as to whether this little being growing inside would live or die. I had never encountered such a mentally deep “choice” such as that before.

It sickened me to think of something ever happening to “my little speck” that I saw on the screen that day.  His life depended on “my choice” of using my body to stay healthy and develop the rest of his body.  He had no say in the matter – he didn’t even know what Seseme Street was yet.  It wasn’t his fault that he was there, drinking up nourishment and trying to survive my hostile uterus (if you watch those shows on conception you’d wonder how anyone ever survives the first 48 hours!!).

But he already had a heartbeat.

To me, stopping that heartbeat meant ending an innocent little life.  To me, stopping that little speck’s (or any “little speck’s”) heartbeat was now on the same level as stopping the heartbeat of an invalid, the heartbeat of a comatose person, or the heartbeat of an alzheimer’s patient.

“Choice” no longer seemed (nor seems) that important to me in the grand scheme of things.  Life was now (and still is, as I finish up this pregnancy) my viewpoint.  The choice to end an innocent life (or “future life”), or the choice to not do everything in your power to keep that innocent life alive, is too heavy a choice for my mind to bear.    After that pre-natal visit, I could no longer stay on the pro-choice camp side.   That short 30 seconds while we all silently listened to my “little speck’s” heartbeat convicted my heart of a fetus’ right to life more than 24 years of solid educational Bible theology, church attendance, christian school attendance, Bible reading, and prayer ever did.

Near the end of the original article, Shannon concludes her pro-life viewpoints with a terrific summarization.

….Unhindered choice is not a guaranteed human right. Think about it: civil society already tells us that we cannot “choose” to abuse a child or “choose” to steal a car. There are legal consequences to those actions, because “choosing” to burglarize a home infringes on the basic liberties of the person who lives there.

The precedent is set. When our right to choose bumps up against the right of another to exist peacefully, our choice is blocked by civilized law.

And it is with this in mind that I realized, as I came to terms with the validity of the human-ness of a embryo and fetus, that I had to accept there was a moral point at which a “woman’s right to choose” ended. Her right to decide what to do with her body bumps up against the right of that baby’s right to exist.

The only place I could arrive after looking at the medical/legal/social/civil/constitutional issues was that something had to give. A woman’s right to choose an abortion cannot logically co-exist with a embryo/fetus’ right to be born.

Simply put, life trumps choice.

I believe the article is one of the best I’ve read for promoting “pro-life” (and I’ve read and heard a lot – I still have a little plastic fetus we were given during an hour long chapel sermon on abortion during 7th grade). After having grown up as an “expected” pro-lifer, I had desensitized myself to all of the typical arguments. They were all repetitive and petty. However, Shannon’s article was really refreshing. It wasn’t crude, it wasn’t demeaning, and it did not promote snobbery towards those who are still pro-choice.

It simply gave one woman’s viewpoint of why she has accepted a pro-life outlook in life.

And I appreciate her writing it!
